Early life

Tyler James Williams was born and raised in New York. His mother is a counselor, and his father is a teacher and former police officer.

Williams has two younger brothers who are actors as well. Both of his younger brothers have appeared on television shows, with Tyrel starring on “Lab Rats”; and Tylen appearing on “Instant Mom.”

Williams has also made guest appearances on both of these shows, playing his brother's character's future self on Lab Rats and portraying his younger brother's cousin on Instant Mom.

Career

Tyler started his acting career when he was just four years old. He starred in “Little Bill,” voicing the character of Bobby; starred as the replacement of Devon Malik Beckford in 2000; and also played his namesake character Tyler on “Sesame Street” from 2000 to 2005.

By September 2005, he had made a name for himself when he played the lead role of Chris in “Everybody Hates Chris.” He was the lead character in the show, which aired for 88 episodes, from 2005 until 2009. In 2007, Tyler won the Young Artist Award for his work on “Everybody Hates Chris.”

He made a guest appearance on “Two for the Money,” “Law & Order: Special Victims Unit,” and “Hi-Jinks.” In 2009, he appeared on “True Jackson, VP,” in the role of True’s love interest - Justin “Lil’ Shakespeare” Weber.

In 2012, Tyler appeared in “Go On” as Owen, and in Disney’s movie “Let It Shine” as Cyrus DeBarge; he was even featured on nine songs of the movie’s soundtracks. At this time, he appeared on Disney XD’s “Lab Rats” in the role of his real brother’s future character - Tyrel.

In 2014, Williams worked on “Dear White People” in the role of Lionel Higgins. He was later cast as a recurring character on “The Walking Dead.” Two years later, he played the role of Russ “Monty” Montgomery in “Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders.
