Biography and early life

Professionally known as ‘Residente,’ the rapper, singer, and songwriter was born on February 23, 1978, in San Juan, Puerto Rico. He descends from a family of artists, a mother who was an actress in the theater and his father who was a labor lawyer, musician, and writer.

He grew up with his mother and brothers, and from an early age, he fell in love with music and art. Sports were also one of his passions; however, his true passion for music, so he ended up studying at the school ‘Libre de Musica’ (School of Visual Arts).

Later, he studied and obtained a master's degree in art at the Savannah College of Art and Design, where he started writing poems and rapping in his spare time.

What did Residente do before he became a rapper?

Before becoming a well-known rapper and songwriter, Residente worked as a screen producer of a short film presented in Madrid and received second place at a festival for independent films.

In addition, influenced by his love for art, he worked on making illustrations and 3D animations for architects. Plus, he worked as a music video editor at one point in his life.

Making a career as a rapper, songwriter, and singer

Residente started a professional career in the music industry when he became one of the alternative rap group ‘Calle 13’ founders. [1]His debut album, starting in 2004, was created with his stepbrother Eduardo Cabra.

Soon after they sent the demo tapes to the label ‘White Lion,’ they received a call about signing a contract, and things kind of kicked off from there. The song ‘Se Vale To-To’ was recorded and soon became the No.1 hit radio.

Not long after that, the duo ‘Calle 13’ released another song with controversial content, ‘Querido FBI,’ in response to the death of one prominent man of the Puerto Rican independence movement, Filliberto Rios[2] .

In the following period, other hit singles appeared from the duo, such as ‘Chulin Culin Chunfly,’ also receiving great success.

On another note, Resistente was also invited by the Puerto Rican Governor to assist in the campaign called ‘Bullet in the Air,’ for which he later composed ‘Lay de Gravedad’ (The Law of Gravity).

From 2007- to 2008, the duo ‘Calle 13’ went on a trip to South America to see how other Latin American’ areas were living, which probably influenced them to release their second album ‘Resistente o Visitanten’ with its lead single ‘Tango del Pecado.’ The album was No.1 on the U.S. Billboard Top Latin Albums.

From 2009 to 2015 ‘Calle 13’ released their third album, ‘Los de Altras Vienen Conmigo’ (In the heights).

Starting from 2016 till now, Residente has embarked on a solo career. It all began after he took a DNA test to trace his roots, and apart from the solo album he released, a documentary and a book were released under his stage name, ‘Residente.’
