Early life

PJ was born in Kentucky, but his family moved to Dallas, Texas, later in life. Both his parents were athletes, and both his mother, Sherry Washington, and his father, Paul Washington Sr., played Division I basketball at Middle Tennessee State. His father wore jersey #25, and PJ Jr. currently wears the same number in his father’s honor.

He has three siblings, two brothers, Tyler and Spencer, and a sister, Alexandria.

As soon as he started high school, PJ started his basketball career.

Career

PJ played for two different high schools - Prime Prep Academy in Dallas, Texas, and Findlay Prep in Vegas, Nevada. By the time he was a senior at Findlay Prep, his average score was 19.6 points, 6.1 assists, 9.4 rebounds, and 1.9 steals per game. As a result, he earned his spot in the McDonald’s All-American Game, where he has ranked the #12 recruit in his class.

As a result of his 5-star recruitment, he had a lot of colleges fighting to get him on their team: Kentucky, Arizona, Kansas, North Carolina, North Carolina State, Texas, UCLA, and UNLV. Ultimately, PJ decided to go to Kentucky, and join the Kentucky Wildcats.

In his first season with the Wildcats, he averaged 10.8 points and 5.7 rebounds per game but improved toward the end of the season, when he played his best game with 18 points and 15 rebounds for the last game of the season.

In 2019, PJ considered leaving Kentucky to pursue his career in the NBA but decided to stay for another year. As a sophomore, he averaged 15.2 points, 7.5 rebounds, and 1.8 assists per game. This same year, he made the ultimate decision to pursue his NBA career and declared for the 2019 NBA draft.

He got drafted by the Charlotte Hornets in July 2019, and his first debut NBA game was against the Chicago Bulls in October 2019. In this game, PJ made 27 points, 4 rebounds, 1 assist, 1 steal, and 1 block, and the Hornets won the game. In addition, he made an NBA debut record by making 7 three-pointers.

In November 2019, he played another amazing game, where he scored 26 points and 5 rebounds in a game against the Detroit Pistons.

His initial contract with the Hornets was a 2-year deal worth $7,855,440, meaning his salary in his first year in the NBA was an astonishing $3,831,840. In addition, in his debut with the NBA, PJ landed a deal with Nike; however, the exact numbers of the deal are undisclosed.[1]

In addition, in September 2020, PJ Washington was named the 2019-20 NBA All-Rookie Second Team by the NBA. Later in 2021, he scored his new personal record with 42 points in a single game, winning over Sacramento Kings.

In his 2019-20 NBA career, he played 58 games, with an average of 30.3 minutes played per game, scoring an average of 12.2 points.

For his 2020-21 season with the Hornets, he played 64 games, averaging 30.5 minutes played, with an average score of 12.9, which was his career-high.

In 2021-22, he played 65 games, averaging 27.2 minutes per game, with an average score per game of 10.3.[2]

Personal life

While PJ was still in college and playing for the Kentucky Wildcats, he dated the social media influencer Brittany Renner. They confirmed their relationship in 2020, and they had a heavy influence as a power couple since Brittany is a soccer player and a gym enthusiast.

They welcomed their son in May 2021, but the couple broke up just a couple of weeks after the baby was born. They haven’t commented on the reasons for the breakup, and Brittany mentioned in an interview with DJ Vlad that the reason was ‘issues in communication.’

As a result, a rumor surfaced that he was paying Brittany $200,000 per month for child support. They both disclosed this rumor on their social media platforms that the information was false. Many of his fans claimed that she only wanted to ‘trap’ him by having his child since she knew he would have a successful career in the NBA.

PJ is currently engaged to Alisah Chanel, and in their official Instagram announcement of their engagement, Brittany commented on Alisah’s photo post to congratulate them, which ultimately put an end to all the rumors about there being some bad blood in their co-parenting relationship.
