Patrick Duffy was born on March 17, 1949, in Townsend, Montana, United States, to Marie and Terence Duffy. He is the youngest of two.

As a young boy, Duffy aspired to be an athlete; however, his involvement in the drama section in high school led him to enroll at the University of Washington, Seattle, to study acting and to become one of the 12 chosen from more than 1,200 applicants.^[1]

Career beginnings

Patrick Duffy began his career in 1970 by appearing in a Taco Bell commercial soon after he made his acting debut in the series "Man from Atlantis," which aired in 1977.

After the short-lived series, the actor landed his career-defining role in CBS primetime soap opera "Dallas." Although the soap opera was a great success, Duffy wanted to leave, leading to Bobby Ewing (his character) being killed.

After Duffy's departure, both the series and Duffy saw declines in popularity, so the actor returned a year later and stayed until 1991. He was part of the show for thirteen years, during which time he also tried his hand at directing a few episodes for the series.

After "Dallas" ended, Duffy returned to the show's spinoff "Knots Landing" and was a part of it for a few episodes.

Patrick Duffy married Carlyn Rosser, a professional ballerina ten years older, in 1974.

The couple lived near Eagle Point, Oregon, with their two sons, Padraic and Conor.

Duffy converted to Nichiren Buddhism and started practicing the chanting of Nam Myōhō Renge Kyō after being introduced to the religion by his wife. His whole family was a part of the Buddhist organization Soka Gakkai International.^[3]

In 1986 the actor faced a tragedy.

Namely, both of his parents got killed in an armed robbery in their home by Kenneth Miller and Sean Wentz, two nineteen-year-olds convicted to 75 years in prison. The Buddhist beliefs helped him cope with the horrific events that his family faced.
