Vanzant was born on March 26, 1994, in Dundee, Oregon, United States. From early in her childhood, Vanzant was a sports enthusiast at heart. Ballet, jazz, and hip-hop dances were her first passion, and she competed professionally for 13 years.[1]
Additionally, she enjoyed hunting and fishing with her father and brother and was often called a tomboy. As a child, Vanzant enjoyed riding dirt bikes and boxing with her brother in the backyard of their family home, earning the nickname 12 Gauge.[2]
Vanzant was heavily bullied when she started high school, so much so that she had to report it to the police. Her classmates used to bully her because of her surname Sletten, and called her "Slutton." Later, Vanzant changed her surname legally to Vanzant because of the ongoing bullying. The "Vanzant" last name was the last name of one of the students her mom was teaching. She chose it because she liked the sound of it.[3]
After moving with the family to Sparks, Nevada, Vanzant tried to find a new dancing studio where she could continue practicing dance, but instead ended up in a gym and started training boxing and other martial arts. She was also encouraged by her father to start fighting.[4]
In an interview for ABC News, the athlete revealed that she was also sexually assaulted when she was fourteen and that fighting saved her life during her darkest moments.
She quickly proved to be a talented athlete and started competing professionally. On June 30, 2012, she made her UFC Debut and won by a split decision.

In 2014 after her first win against Kailin Curran, Vanzant became the sixth female fighter to land an individualized sponsorship deal with Reebok; that many speculate it was because of her looks. The rumors were later addressed by the UFC president, Dana White, saying that Vanznat had the "it" factor that you can't teach to people.[5]
A few wins on the Vanzant side against Felice Herrig and Alex Chambers also marked the following year.
In 2016 she won another fight against Bec Rawlings.
In August 2017, Vanzant moved to 125 pounds flyweight, but numerous complications, such as broken bones, prevented her from fighting that year. Her debut flyweight fight was a year later, in 2018, against Jessica Rose-Clark at UFC Fight Night: Stephens vs. Choi. Unfortunately, Vanzant broke her arm in the second round and lost the match.
In 2019 she was supposed to face Poliana Botelho at UFC 236 but announced that she wouldn't be fighting because of a fractured right arm.
The UFC fighter needed to pull out from another fight against Amanda Ribas in 2020.
The battle against Ribas was rescheduled for a few months later, resulting in a loss for Vanzant.
