Early Life

Montell Du'Sean Barnett Jordan was born on December 3, 1968, in Los Angeles, California, United States.

Throughout his childhood, Montell was incredibly involved in church and grew up a Christian.

In an interview with DJ Vlad, the singer revealed that the church was where he fell in love and learned music.

He also added that he grew up in a rough neighborhood where illegal activities were happening almost every day and that he and his family would sit on the floor at their house to protect themselves from drive-through bullets.

During his childhood, Montell showed his talent and love for music by participating in multiple talent shows, and as an adult, he worked in nightclubs.[2]

Montell attended Junipero Serra High School and Pepperdine University in Malibu, where he earned a degree in communications.

After graduating from college, Montell started working at Williams Television Time and decided that music was the career he wanted to pursue.

Montell searched for a record deal for seven years, and he finally signed one with the music producer and co-founder of Def Jam Recordings, Russell Simmons, and dropped his first and most famous hit, “This is How we do it.”

Music Career

“This is How We Do It” was released in 1995, and it immediately hit number one on the Billboard 100, overtaking Madonna’s “Take a Bow,” where it remained for seven weeks.[3]

As a result of the single, his first album by the same name went platinum, sold more than one million copies, and got him a Grammy nomination for Male R&B Vocal Performance.

“This is How We Do It” opened many doors for Montell, both as a singer and songwriter.

He wrote and produced songs for famous artists such as Deborah Cox, Christina Millan, 98 Degrees, and Shae Jones.

After releasing his biggest hit, Montell released more successful songs that also reached the Billboard 100. "Somethin' 4 da Honeyz," which is featured on his first album, peaked at number 21, and the leading song “Get it On Tonite” (from his fourth album with the same name) peaked at number 4.

In 1996 he released his second album named “More.” The album sold 500.000 units, but none of the songs repeated his previous success.[4]

Besides being a songwriter and singer, Montell was featured in a few movies. He had a small supporting role in the film “The Fighting Temptation,” and made a cameo appearance in “The Nutty Professor.”

In 2003, Montell left Def Jams Recordings. According to the singer, the label wanted to keep his image as an R&B sex symbol, while Mondell wanted to mature as an artist.

He signed with Koch Records and released the album “Life after Def.” The album was followed by moderate success peaking at number 54 on the US Billboard Top R&B/Hip-Hop Albums and number 30 on the Independent Albums chart.

During recent years Mondell was a guest on many prominent shows like American Idol, Tamron Hall's talk show, and “The Masked Singer.”

Personal life and ministry career

In 2010, Mondell planned to make a comeback and release new music; however, he stated that during one visit to the church, God told him to leave the music behind him.[5]

Montell now focuses on his faith and, with his wife, has released a book called “This is How We Do It” that teaches married couples how to build a healthy relationship.

He has been married to a woman named Kristin since 1994, and together they have three kids.
