Early life

Mike was born in Pasadena, California, on the 28th of June, 1970. His mother, Lyla Lee, a fundraising executive, and his father, Reverend Dr. James Melville ‘Mel’ White, didn’t have any other children.

Mike grew up in a modest, strict, religious, conservative Christian household. He attended Polytechnic School, followed by Wesleyan University. At college, he met his writing partner, Zak Penn, who convinced Mike to move to LA.

In 1994, his father came out as gay and started getting involved with other activists for gay rights.[1]

Even though Mike White grew up in a strict environment where he had almost zero exposure to Hollywood projects, he got inspired to start learning the art of screenwriting.

In 1998, he started his screenwriting career with the “Dead Man on Campus,” written in collaboration with Michael Traeger. Even though the movie received poor reviews, it somehow managed to even out at the box office.

The same year, Mike White worked on “Dawson’s Creek,” which he worked on as a writer and producer in the show's first two seasons.

In 1999, he wrote the teen comedy “Freaks and Geeks,” with James Franco in the lead role. Even though the show received good criticism, it got canceled after 18 episodes due to issues with scheduling and filming.

By 2000, Mike’s career breakthrough occurred with his comedy-drama “Chuck & Buck.” Mike worked on the screenwriting, as well as acting in the lead role - as Buck O’Brien. He had no difficulties portraying the part he wrote since it was based on his experiences as a bisexual man.

In 2001, he created the soap opera “Pasadena,” which covered 13 episodes in a single season but got canceled due to terrible ratings. The same year, Mike worked on “Orange County,” which had Jack Black in the lead role, so the movie received critical and commercial success. Mike was on a roll in 2001 since his other project - “The Good Girl,” received nearly the similar success as “Orange County.”

In 2003, he worked on his biggest project until this day - “School of Rock.” He starred in the role of Ned Schneebly and did all the screenwriting. This movie became a big hit and received good criticism. “School of Rock” would be the most significant project for Mike and Jack Black.[2]

In 2007, he worked on “Year of the Dog,” his debut movie as a director. It was well-received by critics but wasn’t as big of a hit at the box office.

In 2011, he worked on HBO’s “Enlightened,” for which he wrote the pilot episode and all the rest episodes in the following two seasons. He returned to collaborating with HBO again in 2021 while working on “The White Lotus.”

He has been accredited as a writer on “The Emoji Movie” for helping build a script structure.

He took part in “The Amazing Race” and “Survivor.” He was cast in “The Amazing Race” alongside his father, Mel, where they lasted for seven legs before ultimately being eliminated in the sixth place. In “Survivor,” he made it as far as Day 39, receiving three jury votes, and finishing as a runner-up next to winner Nick Wilson.
