Mike grew up in a modest, strict, religious, conservative Christian household. He attended Polytechnic School, followed by Wesleyan University. At college, he met his writing partner, Zak Penn, who convinced Mike to move to LA.

In 1994, his father came out as gay and started getting involved with other activists for gay rights.[1]

In 1998, he started his screenwriting career with the “Dead Man on Campus,” written in collaboration with Michael Traeger. Even though the movie received poor reviews, it somehow managed to even out at the box office.

In 1999, he wrote the teen comedy “Freaks and Geeks,” with James Franco in the lead role. Even though the show received good criticism, it got canceled after 18 episodes due to issues with scheduling and filming.

By 2000, Mike’s career breakthrough occurred with his comedy-drama “Chuck & Buck.” Mike worked on the screenwriting, as well as acting in the lead role - as Buck O’Brien. He had no difficulties portraying the part he wrote since it was based on his experiences as a bisexual man.

In 2001, he created the soap opera “Pasadena,” which covered 13 episodes in a single season but got canceled due to terrible ratings. The same year, Mike worked on “Orange County,” which had Jack Black in the lead role, so the movie received critical and commercial success. Mike was on a roll in 2001 since his other project - “The Good Girl,” received nearly the similar success as “Orange County.”

In 2003, he worked on his biggest project until this day - “School of Rock.” He starred in the role of Ned Schneebly and did all the screenwriting. This movie became a big hit and received good criticism. “School of Rock” would be the most significant project for Mike and Jack Black.[2]
