Kevin Liles was born on February 27, 1968, in Baltimore, Maryland, USA. His parents worked hard to provide for him, encouraging him to pursue his interests.
Liles was interested in hip-hop and rap music, and he became involved in the music scene in Baltimore while he was still in high school.
After graduating from Woodlawn High School in 1986, Liles started studying engineering in college, but he dropped out in 1989 to form a rap group with some friends.
They had some success with a regional record label but couldn't sign with a major record label due to contract restrictions.
Liles wrote a popular song, eventually recorded by another group that lip-synced it.
This experience made Liles frustrated with the music industry, so he decided to focus on the business side of music instead of having a musical career.
He wanted to start his own company where musicians would be treated fairly.
In 1991, Kevin Liles began working as an intern for Def Jam Records in the Mid-Atlantic region without pay. Within two years, he became the Mid-Atlantic Marketing Manager, and by 1998, he had become the Def Jam Music Group President.
As president, he increased the company's revenues to $400 million and established new brand extensions, like Def Jam South and Roc-A-Fella.
He also created cross-marketing deals that connected Def Jam's name to various products like movies, television, and video games.
Under his leadership, Def Jam Interactive was created, leading to the development of three Def Jam-branded video games that sold over 8 million units worldwide.
In 2002, after a merger that created the Island/Def Jam Music Group, Liles became the executive vice president of Island Def Jam Music Group.
He played an essential role in helping artists like Jay Z, Ludacris, Kanye West, and Ashanti become successful and well-known brands.
In 2004, Liles became Executive Vice President of Warner Music Group and helped publicize the company in 2005.
He oversaw the expansion of the traditional record company role in the artist's career through WMG's new 360-degree strategy for enhanced artist partnerships.
Today, Liles is the boss of a company called KWL Enterprises, which he started in 2010.
His company helps famous people like singers, athletes, and models to become even more successful. Liles' company is called KWL Management, and it allows entertainers such as D’Angelo, Trey Songz, Jay Sean, and Elle Varner to improve their brands and careers.
Liles also has a sports agency called RSG that helps athletes such as Melvin Gordon, Jarvis Landry, Bubba Watson, Denny Hamlin, and Sanya Richards Ross to have successful careers.
Apart from helping famous people, Liles founded 300 Entertainment with his friends Lyor Cohen and Todd Moscowitz in 2014.
300 Entertainment is a content company that works in the entertainment industry. It has famous singers like Fetty Wap, Highly Suspect, Conrad Sewell, Young Thug, and Coheed and Cambria signed to them.
As a member of various organizations, Liles has significantly contributed to charity, including the diversity board of Ogilvy & Mather, New Yorkers For Children, Junior Achievement of New York, the Executive Leadership Council, SEED School of Maryland, Harbor Bank, and HealthCorps.
He wrote a book called "Make It Happen: the Hip Hop Generation's Guide to Success" and also manages Kevin Liles for a Better Baltimore. This organization invests in the Baltimore community, and he also runs the Make It Happen Foundation, which helps African-American youth succeed in business.
