Jerrod Carmichael was born in North Carolina on April 6, 1987, and has an older brother named Joe. He grew up in poverty and often talked about it in his stand-up comedy, which is why the audience finds it easy to relate to him.
As a child, he hosted a morning news show on his elementary school's local access channel and found his calling then.
He graduated high school in 2005 and was influenced by comedians such as George Carlin, Bill Cosby, Richard Pryor, and Sinbad.
Jerrod decided to leave North Carolina at the age of 20 in an attempt to pursue his dream of becoming a stand-up comedian. Even though he had never performed before, he did his best to find clubs to perform in, and his first stand-up comedy performance was at ‘The Comedy Store’ in West Hollywood.
He took gigs in clubs until he finally got the chance to perform at the Just For Laughs festival in the “New Faces” showcase in 2011. After that, he appeared on “The Goodwin Games” show in 2013, which is what helped him land his debut role as an actor in the movie “Neighbors” in 2014. Later in 2014, he had his first HBO stand-up special - “Love at the Store.”
From 2015 to 2017, Jerrod worked on a project he co-created, co-wrote, produced, and starred in - “The Carmichael Show,”; a semi-biographical sitcom. The show was well-accepted by the audience, mostly because it included trending topics such as BLM (Black Lives Matter), LGBTQ+ issues, gun rights, politics, and the day-to-day life of black people in America.
In 2017, he had his second stand-up comedy special - “8,” which was filmed at the Masonic Hall in NY. Later from 2018 to 2019, he worked as the executive producer for “Rel,” a Fox sitcom. At the same time, he worked as a director on “Drew Michael” - Drew Michael’s stand-up comedy special.
In 2019, Jerrod worked with Tyler, the Creator, on his fifth studio album - “IGOR,” where he narrated the album by using short phrases to explain the character’s state of mind.
In addition, he got hired by the world-renowned Quentin Tarantino in 2019 to collaborate on the Django & Zorro crossover film adaptation of the comic book series. 2019 was as busy as it gets for Carmichael; he got hired by HBO as well to work on the docuseries “Home Videos” and “Sermon on the Mount.”
In 2021, he worked on a bit different project; he got hired both as a director and actor for the comedy thriller - “On the Count of Three. ”
Earlier in 2022, he filmed his third HBO comedy special - “Rothaniel,” and just two days later, he hosted his first-ever Saturday Night Live appearance. In an interview with GQ, Jerrod mentioned he considered himself ‘the least famous person to ever land [the SNL] gig.’

In his GQ interview, Jerrod mentioned Dave Chapelle and stated he was wrong for making hateful comments about trans people. Jerrod said:
“Chappelle, do you know what comes up when you Google your name, bro? That's the legacy? Your legacy is a bunch of opinions on trans shit? It's an odd hill to die on. And it's like, hey, bro….”
