Biography

Jensen Huang is a Taiwanese-American businessman, electrical engineer, and co-founder of NVIDIA. As of 2023, Jensen’s net worth is estimated at $21.8B.

Early life and education

Jensen Huang (Jen-Hsun "Jensen" Huang) was born to educator parents on February 17, 1963, in Tainan, Taiwan. He lived in Taiwan until the age of 9, before his parents decided to move to the US.

Jensen started showing much interest in technology and was primarily interested in video games. Luckily, his parents noticed his ambitions and enrolled him in a computer programming course when he was ten, probably the turning point in his life.

They initially lived in Kentucky, but by the time he started high school, his family and him moved to Beaverton, Oregon, where he studied at Aloha High School. He enrolled at Oregon State University, earning his bachelor's in electrical engineering in 1984.

Once he graduated with a BSc, he enrolled for master’s studies at Stanford University, where he worked designing chips for video gaming.

He got his master’s in 1992 and co-founded Nvidia Corporation, specializing in designing and manufacturing processing units (GPUs) for gaming and professional applications.

Career

After finishing his education at Oregon and Stanford, Jensen worked at several technology companies, such as LSI Logic Corporation and Advanced Micro Devices (AMD), where he learned much about chip design and development. This knowledge skyrocketed Nvidia’s success later.

In 1993, Huang, Chris Malachowsky, and Curtis Priem founded Nvidia. Initially, they developed 3D graphics chips for gaming consoles and personal computers. Since Huang was the crucial element in developing the first GPU, he is the person who revolutionized the gaming industry by tailoring highly realistic 3D graphics.

Currently, Nvidia creates AI processors, self-driving car platforms, and data center technologies. In addition, their chips are used in applications used for scientific research, VR, and deep learning. Nvidia’s AI technologies are currently leading in the natural language processing and medical image analysis fields.[1]

Considering his extensive knowledge in this field, he has managed to foresee where the technology industry is moving toward and to direct Nvidia accordingly. As a result, Nvidia’s net worth as of March 6th, 2023, is $581.78B.

Additionally, Jensen Huang has been named one of Time’s 100 most influential people in the world in 2017, Forbes’ Richest People,[2]Dr. Morris Chang Exemplary Leadership Award, the IEEE Founders Medal, and Silicon Valley Entrepreneur of the Year.

Personal life

Jensen is a philanthropist and has made numerous donations in the computer science and engineering field. In 2017, he donated $30 million to Stanford University to support building the new electrical engineering department. As a sign of appreciation, the new building is named the Huang Engineering Center.

Also, Jensen donated $1 million to the University of Oregon to support a new computer science building. In 2022, he donated $50 million more with his wife Lori, “a portion of a $200 million donation towards the creation of supercomputing institute on campus.”[3]

Huang is married to Lori Huang, whom he met while studying at Oregon University, and who was his lab partner. They have been together ever since, and they have two children.[4]

Conclusion

In conclusion, Jensen Huang's donations have had a significant impact on the fields of computer science and engineering. His contributions have supported the development of new technologies, the training of future engineers and scientists, and the promotion of education and research.

Huang's philanthropy is an integral part of his legacy and highlights his commitment to using his success to make a positive difference in the world.
