Biography

Irv Gotti is the owner of Murder Inc. and is one of the most famous producers in the hip-hop R’n’B music industry. His net worth is estimated at $25 million.

Gotti is mostly famous for working with one of the biggest names in the industry: Kanye West, Jay-Z, Ashanti, Ja Rule, Jennifer Lopez, and DMX.

He had a feud with the rapper 50 Cent, which involved his brother Chris Gotti[1]

Early life

Not much is known about Irv Gotti’s childhood. He was born and raised in New York and grew up in Queens. He is of African-American and Filipino descent. His parents, Nee Nee Lorenzo and Irvington Domingo Lorenzo, Sr., had six more children. Only Irv and Chris are public figures that are considered celebrities, while the rest of their siblings lead a more private life.

Due to a lack of money, while raising seven children, Irv took it upon himself to hustle his way into making some profit for the family by selling cocaine in his earlier days. However, he got into trouble with the police, so he decided to end this way of making money.[2]

Irv Gotti hasn’t made any public announcements about where he went to elementary or high school, nor if he ever got into college or finished one.

Career

The public got introduced to the public in 1995 with the ‘Eyes on Hip Hop’ movie. He only appeared in a music video, but this is how many artists came to learn his name. By the end of 1995, Irv Gotti got a gig directing the music video for Mariah Carey’s ‘Joy to the World’.

By 1998, Gotti had already made his big breakthrough when he wrote and directed the ‘Can I Get A…’ song for the movie ‘Rush Hour’. At the end of the year, Irv Gotti, and his brother, Chris Gotti, founded the Murder, Inc. record label.

After working multiple times with Def Jam for DMX and Jay-Z, the co-founder of Dem Jam, Russell Simmons, gave Gotti his record label under Def Jam. He decided to go for the ‘Murder Inc.’ name due to the notorious mob that went under the same name from the ‘20s until the late ‘40s. Reportedly, Gotti said he wanted to ‘put out hit records’.

The record label, Murder Inc., including Irv Gotti and Ja Rule, were in a very public feud with G-Unit Records, Shady Records, and Aftermath Records due to Ja Rule’s issues with 50 Cent.

In 2003, Murder Inc. was under investigation, followed by a raid of their office under the suspicion of money laundering. Irv and Chris Gotti were charged due to being associated with the notorious New York City drug lord known as Supreme. In 2005, the Gotti brothers were acquitted of all charges.

The record label changed the name to ‘The Inc.’ due to the many drug-related scandals. In 2007, Irv co-produced Vanessa Carlton’s album, and in 2009, Irv Gotti announced that Murder Inc. was leaving Universal Records.

In 2013, Gotti created a new label - ‘Visionary’, and Murder Inc. was relaunched as an umbrella label.

Personal life

Reportedly, Irv Gotti is currently single. For most of his life, he tried to keep his relationships as private as possible.

Irv Gotti married Debbie Lorenzo, and they had three children together - Sonny, Angie, and Johnatan. In 2013, after being together for over a decade, the couple divorced, and Debbie stated that the reason was ‘the cheating and everything else’.[3]

The woman he cheated with, Ashanti, was an artist that was signed on his record label, and even though he was married at the time they started dating, Gotti claimed he was in love. In several statements, he mentioned he was separated from his wife at the time, and he had bought an apartment in New York City, where Ashanti had moved in with him, and they spent months together working on her new album.

Irv Gotti’s relationship with Ashanti didn’t last long, and Debbie and Irv didn’t hesitate to throw shade at Ashanti.

His other publicly known relationships include Christina Milian, who signed a contract with Murder Inc. Records in 2001.

Karrine Steffans is another name related to Gotti. Reportedly, they met on the set while Ja Rule was filming a video, and she soon took the job of one of Gotti’s video girls - Keisha. She stated that she was paid to do bad things while being involved with Gotti, including multiple promiscuous acts.

Conclusion

Irv Gotti was one of the biggest names in the late ‘90s and early ‘00s hip-hop R&B scene. He worked closely with DMX, Jay-Z, Mariah Carey, and many others.

Even though he wasn’t unfamiliar with scandals, FBI investigations, drug selling, and money laundering, Irv Gotti still has a net worth of over $25 million as of 2022.
