Harold Varner III was born on August 15, 1990, in Akron, Ohio, United States, to Patricia Carter and Harold Varner, Jr..[1] [2]
Golf became part of Varner’s life from a very young age. Varner's father introduced him to golf when he was only two, and he had already started playing with a group of 20-50 children on a local golf course when he was nine years old.
Varner told Golf.com that having access to golf from an early age influenced him to gain his craft the most.[3]
Varner attended Forestview High School and graduated from East Carolina University. During his high school and college years, Varner actively played golf and even competed in the top amateur competition in the U.S. - The United States Amateur Championship 2010.[4]
In addition, Varner became the University's first golf player to win Conference USA Player of the Year honors.[5]
As soon as Varner graduated college, he focused all his attention on becoming a professional golfer.
In 2012, he made his professional debut at the Chiquita Classic, and in 2013 he managed to qualify for the U.S. Open 2013.
As for Varner's 2014, he appeared in the Web.com Tour, where he made 13 cuts in 21 tournaments and finished in the top 10 twice.
Varner competed in three other professional competitions the same year: PGA Tour, Northern Trust Open, and The Wells Fargo Championship.
In 2015, he finished 25th on the Web.com Tour regular-season money list to become the first African-American golfer to progress to the PGA Tour from the Web.com Tour.
Putting the finishing touches on a successful year, the golfer won the Australian PGA Championship in 2016, becoming the second American to win the Australian PGA Championship.
In 2022, Varner won PIF Saudi International on the Asian Tour.
The same year Varner held his first solo 54-hole PGA Tour lead at the RBC Heritage and ended up in third place.
