Danny (DeWayne) McCray is a former football player. He played at free safety and special teamer positions. McCray played for the Dallas Cowboys as an undrafted free agent in two stints: from 2010 to 2013 and in 2015, and signed a one-year contract with the Chicago Bears in 2014.[1]
Danny also became a household name after he competed in the reality show “Survivor” in 2021. He also won in the CBS reality show “The Challenge: USA.”
Danny’s net worth is estimated at $1.6 million in 2022.
Danny McCray is a Houston, Texas native. He attended Westfield High School and played for the school team. In 2004, he secured the Class 5A state championship for his school team.
As an acknowledgment of his skills and talent, he was awarded first-team all-district honors in his senior year in 2005.
Danny continued playing football at Louisiana State University, where his primary position was in special teams and as a backup at safety and linebacker.
During his college football career, Danny’s score was 52 games, with 13 starts and 196 tackles, with 7 recorded tackles for losses and 2 for sacks.

In 2010, McCray’s lifelong dream to play in the NFL came true when he signed with Dallas Cowboys as an undrafted free agent at the recommendation of the special teams coach Joe DeCamillis. He was given uniform #40, previously worn by Bill Bates.
His rookie start was impressive and marked with many “firsts.”
He achieved 28 special teams tackles, which is the most any Cowboys player scored since Jim Schwantz’s record in 1996, and the third-most in the Cowboys’ history since 1988.
In 2011, Danny became the first Cowboys player to lead the team consecutively two times in special teams tackles (19) since the team star Bill Bates in 1989–1990.
Three years into his Cowboys career, he became the unit leader. In 2012, his career got a much-deserved break. After two years contributing as safety and linebacker on the defense, he was put in the position of solid strong safety in the game against the Chicago Bears.
Danny’s new position replaced Barry Church, who got injured at the end of the season. Although his strong safety career took off on a good note, starting ten games and finishing second on the team in tackles (87), he had a hard time in pass coverage, and his special teams play dropped to second in tackles (18).
This resulted in McCray losing his playing time and starting position in the last two games of the season. In 2013, he agreed to a reduced salary to stay on the team. He played less on the defense.
When Rich Bisaccia became the new special teams coordinator, he changed McCray’s position, which also affected his defense performance, ranking sixth in the team.
In 2014, Danny signed with the Chicago Bears for one year and ranked fourth from ten special teams tackles. He came to the spotlight in the game against the New York Jets, making ten tackles on defense.
The following year in 2015, he returned to the Cowboys for a second stint. However, he wasn’t re-signed after one season.
During his NFL career, he earned more than $3.6 million.

The show was shot in Fiji. McCray was placed in the Luvu tribe at the beginning, but was later transferred to the VIakan tribe after winning a challenge. He was also part of the All-Black Alliance.
As a professional athlete having high physical endurance, Danny ended up in 6th place before being eliminated at the Tribal Council on day 23 of 26. He lasted the longest without getting elimination votes among all the other contestants on Survivor.
Danny’s positive attitude and character made him the audience’s favorite and brought him fame.
