D Smoke is an American Grammy-nominated rapper, signed to the EMPIRE Record Label.

He started making his name after appearing on the first season of the Netflix show “Rhythm + Flow.”

Early life

Not much is known about D Smoke’s early life. He grew up with his mother and brothers in Inglewood, California, where he would later work as a teacher. His mother was Tina Turner’s backup singer, and one of his brothers, SiR, is signed to Dawg Entertainment, belonging to well-known rapper Kendrick Lamar. In addition, his mother was a piano instructor, so D Smoke got the chance to learn how to play both the piano and the drums.[1]

In 2006, D Smoke formed a songwriting group named WoodWorks, along with his brothers and his cousin. His cousin, Tiffany Gouché, wrote songs for popular singers, such as The Pussycat Dolls.

He graduated college from UCLA and proceeded to be a Spanish and music theory teacher at Inglewood High School.

In 2015, he appeared on SiR’s album “Seven Sundays,” on the song “You Ain’t Ready.”

In 2019, D Smoke was a contestant on the Netflix show “Rhythm + Flow”, where he was named the winner of the series. Later the same year, he released a seven-track project called “Inglewood High”. Many positive critics surfaced in the following period, stating that D Smoke was able to “utilize multiple flows, deliver introspective storytelling, and would rap very well in Spanish”.

In one of his performances, besides rapping in multiple different rhythms, D Smoke showed he plays the piano too.

In 2021, D Smoke, received four different nominations. At the Grammy Awards, he received two nominations: Best New Artist, and Best Rap Album for “Black Habits.” At the NAACP Image Awards, he was nominated for Outstanding New Artist; and at the Pop Awards, he was nominated for Music Video of the Year for the song “Black Habits I.” Unfortunately, he didn’t win in any category.
