Chris Pérez, whose real name is Christopher Gilbert Pérez, is a guitarist, musician, songwriter and author, known as the lead guitarist in the Tejano band Selena y Los Dinos [1] . Chris was also married to Selena Quintanilla [2] , a popular Mexican-American Tejano singer and the band's frontwoman.

He later created his own band bearing his name - Chris Pérez Band. Chris’s net worth is estimated at $3 million.

Chris Pérez’s Early life

Chris Pérez was born in San Antonio, Texas. He showed interest in music from an early age. Pérez played the French horn in middle school and joined the school band.

Later he taught himself to play the electric guitar, although his mother disapproved of it because of the stereotypes of rock and roll music. Pérez was influenced by his favorite rock bands and musicians, Iron Maiden, Def Leppard, Kiss, Van Halen, the Scorpions, and Ozzy Osbourne. He also drew inspiration for his guitar solos from Carlos Santana.

Chris Pérez's music career

Pérez wanted to go to Los Angeles and start his own rock band at 17. However, Tony Lares invited him to join his cousin Shelly Lares’s band in 1986.

Shelly Lares played Tejano music, a mixture of country music, traditional Mexican folk music, and polkas, performed in Spanish and English. Pérez didn’t like that kind of music, but decided to join anyway because it paid well.

Chris became Shelly Lares’s musical director and songwriter in 1989. Despite not liking the music style at first, he was well-received by the band’s fans and became a respected Tejano guitarist.

Pérez’s reputation reached A.B. Quintanilla, Selena’s older brother and producer, who was looking for a guitarist for the band Selena y Los Dinos. A.B. Quintanilla offered Pérez the position, and he accepted because he liked the band’s hip and sophisticated music style, which was different from other Tejano bands.

At first, the band’s manager and Selena’s father, Abraham Quintanilla, didn’t like Pérez’s rock style because he thought it would ruin his daughter’s image and career. But, they found common ground, became good friends, and even wrote songs for Selena together.

Pérez’s relationship with Selena

Chris Pérez and Selena started a romantic relationship in 1989. When her father, Abraham, learned about it, he kicked Pérez out of the band. After the couple married in 1992, they reconciled with Abraham, and he accepted Pérez back into the band.

Pérez was playing and writing for the Selena y Los Dinos until Selena’s tragic death in 1995 when she was murdered by her former boutiques and fan club.

Chris took Selena’s death extremely hard. He couldn’t eat two days after she died; he couldn’t sleep and started abusing alcohol and drugs. Pėrez felt guilty for not protecting Selena from being murdered.

In an interview, he stated:

“I can't say anything about how I am going to feel in another hour much less you know a year from now or something. After what has happened... honestly I still feel married because I still feel that big part of me. I know legally it's not the case but I still feel that way!” [3]

The band fell apart after Selena’s death.

Chris Pérez band

In 1998, Chris formed his own band named the Chris Pérez Band. The band released their debut studio album “Resurrection” in 1999, which won the Grammy Award for Best Latin Rock, Urban or Alternative Album in 2000.

In 2002, the band published their second and last album, “Una Noche Más,” before they dissolved.

Los Dinos reunited to perform at the Selena ¡VIVE! tribute concert in 2005.

Pérez joined his brother-in-law, A.B. Quintanilla's band Kumbia All Starz and Kumbia Kings the following year. However, he left in 2010 to form another band Chris Pérez Project, with Angel Ferrer, a singer from Puerto Rico.

Personal life

Pérez married for the second time with Venessa Villanueva. They had two children, Cassie and Noah. The couple divorced in 2008.

In 2012, Pérez published the book “To Selena, With Love,” in which he describes their life, relationships, and challenges. In 2016, he announced that the book would be made into a TV series.

After the announcement, Selena’s father, Abraham, filed a lawsuit against Pérez, claiming he violated an estate properties agreement he signed with the Quintanilla family after Selena’s death, which gives all rights to Selena’s likeness and name to her estate [4] .

This resulted in a dispute between Pérez and the family, which was finally settled in September 2021. The TV series based on “To Selena, With Love” is still upcoming.

Pérez appeared in multiple documentaries [5]covering the life of the beloved Mexican-American singer Selena.
