Early Life

Carly Rae Jepsen was born in Mission, British Columbia, on November 21, 1985, to parents Alexandra and Larry Jepsen. Since Carly was a youngster, she has been interested in everything artistic.

She attended Heritage Park Secondary School when she found her passion for musical theater. She followed her passion, and soon, she appeared in the production of “Annie” as Annie, in “Grease” as Sandy Olsson [1] , and in “The Wizard Of Oz” as Dorothy Gale [2] .

But singing and acting weren’t always her career paths. Her parents and most of her family were teachers, so Carly considered making her parents proud and following in their footsteps.

When she got older, Carly took music classes at both British Columbia University [3] , and Capilano University [4] , but her career didn’t go off until her drama high school teacher pushed her to audition for the Canadian College Of Performing Arts in 2004.

After graduating with flying colors, Carly wanted to see what it felt like to be a grown-up and moved to Vancouver, where she started working menial jobs like barista, assistant, bartender, etc.

Career

  • Carly should be grateful for her high school drama teacher, who helped her a lot and encouraged her to pursue music. In 2007, Carly’s teacher encouraged her to audition for Canadian Idol, where she sang one of her original songs called “Sweet Talker.”
  • Carly would finish in third place and would go on to release her new single, “Sunshine On My Shoulders,” in 2008. Almost immediately after releasing her single, the singer released her first album, “Tug Of War.”
  • Carly’s career peaked in 2011 when she co-wrote and released the viral song “Call Me Maybe.” From then on, Carly’s life and career would drastically change.
  • The song was so viral that it got recognition from famous artists like Justin Bieber, Selena Gomez, Katy Perry, Ashley Tisdale, and many more.
  • The “Call Me Maybe” singer got signed by Justin Bieber’s manager, Scooter Braun, and his record label, “Schoolboy Records.” [5]
  • Her single reached number one on the Billboard Hot 100and would be nominated for two Grammy Awards and become The Song Of The Year.
  • The singer’s second album came out in 2012 and was called “Kiss.” Although it wasn’t as popular as her first one, her single “Tonight I’m Getting Over You” became massively popular, so her album became certified gold in Canada.
  • Carly’s third album came out in 2015 and was called “Emotion.” The video for her song “I Really Like You,” which made the album even more popular, was lip-synched by Tom Hanks.

  • In 2013 she received a Juno Award for both Album Of The Year and Single Of The Year.
  • Carly got multiple nominations at the 55th Annual Grammys for Best Pop Solo Performance and Song Of The Year.

Why Did Carly’s Career Flop?

There are multiple reasons why a young pop star’s career would flop so easily after releasing such a huge hit song, but the main reason is that she couldn’t compete with herself.

There is a row of talented artists who could not compete with their own hit songs, so they became one-hit wonders. For example, take Gotye[] and his evergreen song, “Somebody That I Used To Know.

He and his duet will always be a fan favorite, making all his other work basically meaningless. This is precisely what happened to Carly and her career.

Even though she has hundreds of other songs, she became the “Call Me Maybe” girl, and her one single overshadows her whole career.

On the other hand, Jepsen’s fans wanted her to do something different with her music, but they always compared her work with the top single.

This happened when she released her single “I Really Like You,” and she was wildly critiqued and compared to her own previous music.

The Album on which “I Really Like You” was, was also very weirdly promoted and wasn’t released worldwide, which, so to say, was a recipe for disaster.

She released multiple singles of the album in a period of four months without actually releasing the album itself. Hence, the fans already knew half of her album and didn’t have the need actually to buy any of her work.

Even without her music charting on the top lists, Carly is a very appreciated artist and musician. She has a very loyal fan base that listens to her new work and would always root for her, proving that you don’t need ratings and awards to be an artist.
