Bethany Hamilton was born in Lihue, Hawaii, where she grew up with her two older brothers. Her father, Tom, was a waiter, and her mother was a housewife.
She didn’t attend school and was homeschooled by her mother.
Surprisingly, she learned how to surf when she was only three years old and was ready to compete by eight.
Bethany’s surfing career started when she was still a child and she started surfing competitively when she was just eight years old. People in the industry noticed her, offering her sponsorships and endorsements.
At 12, Bethany won 2nd place at the National Scholastic Surfing Competition in the Women’s Division.
Just before hitting her teenage years, at 13, young Bethany was attacked and bit by a 14-foot (4,3 m) tiger shark . The tragic event happened on a morning surf along Tunnels Beach, Kauai, where she went along with her best friend Alana, Alana’s father and brother.
The shark bit off Bethany’s left arm, and by the time she arrived at the hospital, she had already lost over 60% blood, falling into hypovolemic shock.
After the incident, an investigation started immediately, searching for the tiger shark caught and killed about one mile from the attack scene.
Despite the tragic event that occurred later on, she was determined to keep surfing, and she did that only one month after being a bit off by a shark.
Inspirational as it is, after the trauma of the incident, Bethany was learning how to surf with one arm only, all by herself. A new custom-made board was designed just for her to compensate for the loss of her arm.
She was very persistent, and only 26 days after the attack, she started to compete again and, in 2004, had her first major competition.
Bethany’s story received massive media coverage, so she instantly became a star, recognized everywhere she went. In 2004, not long after her recovery, she was given her first acting role and appeared in the film 'Dolphin Tale.'
She was a true inspiration to people and received invitations to be a part of various TV shows, making her a hero. Additionally, she was on the cover story of the first issue of ‘niNe’ magazine .
Bethany won the ESPY Award for Best Comeback Athletein 2004 and received the Courage Teen Choice Award.
In 2009 she won $25,000 as a contestant on ‘Are You Smarter Than a Fifth Grader’.
In 2011, based on Bethany’s autobiography book, a movie was released, ‘Soul Surfer’ where actress AnnaSophia Robb played Bethany Hamilton. Bethany herself played all the one-armed surfing stunts in the movie.
Bethany also starred in the documentary about her ‘Bethany Hamilton: Unstoppable’, in 2015.
Besides this, Bethany has also appeared in the TLC series ‘19 Kids and Counting.’
So far, Bethany has published eight books, one of which, 'Soul Surfer: A True Story of Faith, Family, and Fighting to Get Back on the Board,' became an absolute hit. She wrote the book right after being attacked by a shark in 2004, and it is her autobiography with details of the attack itself, her recovery, and how she managed to get back on the board and compete.
After that book, Bethany continued writing and wrote Christian devotional books for young girls where she gave her perspective, answering faith questions and how it helped her in the hard times she had after the incident.
